According to Chinese media, Huawei has invested heavily in research and development (R&D) from January to June 2025, at 96.6 billion yuan. This figure increased by 9.04% over the same period last year and accounted for 22.7% of Huawei's revenue in the first half of 2025.
Previously in 2024, Huawei spent 170 billion yuan on R&D and achieved positive results. Therefore, the Chinese telecommunications giant is expected to increase investment in 2025, after Huawei's 5G chip sales grew strongly.
Huawei's chip business is reaching its strongest attraction among all other segments. Although the company is still trying to overcome challenges from the US and "slowing down in 5G investment", it is still doing well in this field.
Huawei is focusing on three main chipset parts. In particular, the Kirin chip will be for smartphones, Kunpeng chip for data centers, and Ascend chip for AI (artificial intelligence).
In the current context, Huawei's main customer list in the chipset business includes China Mobile (9%), China Telecom (28%), and China Unicom (15%).
In addition, Huawei is focusing on building a self-developed software ecosystem, AI network chips, operating systems for services and databases.
Huawei is making a lot of progress in many areas, such as AI cloud services. However, sales of 5G-powered smartphones could help Huawei achieve a new revenue target in 2025.
According to Huawei Cloud Computing's leadership, in 2025, the company will invest more strongly, speeding up the production of 5G chips. Achievements in this field will help the company not only affirm its position in China but also reach out globally.
